Dr. Makeba Williams — Why menopause is a powerful new beginning

“Menopause is quite literally one of the most universal human experiences.” — Dr. Makeba Williams

Dr. Williams suggests we need to reframe how we think about menopause and she uses her personal experience to lead the way.

Dr. Makeba Williams — Why menopause is a powerful new beginning, a TEDx Nashville Women talk given on January 21, 2026.

2 excerpts from Dr. Williams’s talk

Here’s the reality. Menopause is a life stage that half the world’s population will go through. A stage that will last decades, impacting your brain, your bones, your sex life, your sleep, your confidence, and even your career.  And yet, many women arrive at this stage totally unprepared, typing questions into search engines at 3 in the morning or endlessly scrolling social media for answers instead of talking with their doctors.

Why menopause is a powerful new beginning

Menopause is a normal physiologic transition. It’s not a disease. We can’t prevent it from happening. Some women are going to transition with few symptoms and need little intervention. And for others, it will be more impactful. And for them, safe and effective treatment options exist, both hormonal and non hormonal. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment. And that’s the point to help women live in empowered menopause. It is imperative that we have informed conversations shaped by science and guided by individual values, preferences, and lived experiences.
