An Expert Perspective on Perimenopause

In this CBC article, we get an expert perspective on perimenopause from Dr. Jerilynn Prior, an endocrinologist, and WLB advisor.

I’m an expert in hormones and women’s reproduction, and it hit me with a ton of bricks.

Most physicians and gynecologists say perimenopause doesn’t officially start until a woman’s menstrual cycle begins to change. But Prior says perimenopause and its symptoms can begin years before that.

Basically, if you talk to any doctor, if your periods aren’t changed then ‘It’s all in your head, dear,’ The medical students are not being taught what is scientifically very obvious.

The first and most important is understand it’s normal, understand that others are having similar experiences.

For those that want to hear more from Dr. Prior, here are four short videos.

“Perimenopause is long, it’s irregular, it’s unpredictable but it ends.”

 “It’s Perimenopause — You Aren’t Going Crazy!

“The only conclusion I could make was that medicine had it wrong”.

“This is not me! When do I get my self back?”

And for those that really want to understand the science. Here is a talk Dr. Prior gave at Tuft’s Medical School last fall.

Dr. Prior is the founder of The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (CeMCOR).
